First came ugly green, and now weird shoes are winning again. For those with acquired taste, tap in! What better person to ask about the next big shoe trend than a New York-based fashion analyst with a self-proclaimed obsession with “freaky” shoes? I sat down with Mandy Lee (@oldloserinbrooklyn), the content creator and trend forecaster known for her spot-on fashion predictions, front-row event appearances, and wildly eclectic shoe collection, to talk about the styles quietly taking over NYC right now. If you’re unfamiliar with the term, a “freaky” shoe leans into the off-kilter and experimental—think Margiela Tabis, Simone Rocha Crocs, or even Cecile Banhsen sandals. They’re funky, unexpected, and just strange enough to become the standout piece you reach for again and again.
“I believe that fashion is moving toward more experiential, foot-emphasizing silhouettes,” Lee says. And the style she’s gravitating towards most this season? Heels—but styled for more casual moments. “I’ve been really interested in heels for a casual moment,” she says, adding that she’s especially drawn to the idea of “trying to make heels casual again.”
